Le Bal Café

October 12, 2012 By Kristen

I mostly use Anglo-expat blogs as guides for Paris restaurants (yes… I know I should use Le Fooding for French practice), and it’s rare that I read any reviews of places where we live in the 17ème, so we frequently find ourselves heading over to the 10ème or the 11ème. So one day last winter, I was very excited to read about Le Bal Café on Paris Notebook and was even more excited that it was not too far from home. Since then my husband and I eat brunch there quite frequently and I always thought that they would be a great spot for kale integration.

So when I popped in to chat with Alice, one of the owners/chefs, last week I was even more excited to learn that they had just ordered kale and it was waiting to be used, the very next day.

Alice made a dish of roasted lamb with red beets and sautéed kale. And just like Au Passage, the French people that ordered the dish really enjoyed the kale and devoured it.

Like Verjus and Au Passage, Le Bal Café will occasionally serve kale on the menu but not every day since their menus consistently change based on seasons and what is freshest from markets and distributors.

There might even be some kale there this weekend. Bon week-end indeed!

Hello! Here is the #KaleSpotted map that I update frequently with where you find kale in Paris (and soon will be expanding to France). I hope this helps!

Thank you so very much Kristen!!!

Is kale in season at this time in Paris? Or would I have to wait? I understand that it’s not the same as US, where you can find kale throughout the year.

The “season” is coming back finally. It is possible to grow kale year-round in France but most of the French farmers do not think it is possible (but the French don’t think that very much is possible at all until you coerce them into realizing that it is!) The map is updated right now and will be as more markets are selling it. More on my thoughts about kale being in season here : http://www.thekaleproject.com/2013/06/farmer-update-out-of-season/

You’ll see what I mean now :) Enjoy and let me know if you have any other questions!
