The Kale Project in New York City…

July 10, 2012 By Kristen

I’m getting a bit ahead of myself as today is only July 10. But on July 27, I’m flying to New York for one week in the city and then another week in my hometown of Pittsburgh.

And I’m doing a kale marathon and it will be bigger & better than the New York City Marathon – which I ran in 2008 – so I know what I need to do to make it bigger & better.

I’m going to eat kale dishes all over the city.

What are your favorite restaurants in New York that have a killer kale dish? I’m taking suggestions now to start planning the most efficient kale itinerary that I can!

I look forward to reading about your NYC kale adventures! I was just in Vermont, where kale abounds. I think I ate it three meals a day. Highly recommended for all kale connoisseurs :)

Thanks Ann! Do you have any fave places in NY? I loved your Vermont post and a kale eggs benedict sounds so good! Eating it three meals a day is my plan… not to go overboard just because there are so many great ways to enjoy kale :)

Nougatine has a great kale salad with serrano chilies and parmesan dressing, and you have to try Northern Spy’s salad with roasted squash and toasted almonds… delicious!

Thanks Christine! J’adore Northern Spy’s salad (they were like one of the first!) but I’ll have to add Nougatine to my list!

Digg Inn on E. 17th (super close to Union Square) has a pretty good Kale & Apple salad. Also, sometimes City Bakery has kale salad but it’s very sporadic. Good luck with your kale adventures in Paris.

When I move there I look forward to it being more easily available than it is now. :-)

Hi Sue! Thanks for the recos. I’ve never heard of Digg Inn and will have to check it out. When are you moving to Paris? I hope I don’t let you down and it is available when you arrive! Thanks for reading & your support! x

I’ll be moving either later this year or early next year. I’m recently engaged to my little french man so it all depends on getting all my paperwork sorted and getting it approved during my next trip to Paris. I’m sure I’ll need lots of luck and a shot! :-)

Oh awesome!! Well keep me posted and I hope that kale is here when you arrive (or at least was here and will be here again when in season.) Best of luck!

Here are some vegan spots in the city, the first of which has a “Green Life” smoothie, including Kale:
Candle Café – Third Ave btwn 74th and 75th
Candle Café West – Broadway at 90th
    Candle 79 – 79th between Lex and 3rd
    Have fun!
    xx
